SGOT Test: What Is It And How Do You Interpret Results?

SGOT Test

What is an SGOT Test?

A blood test called the serum glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase (SGOT) is a part of a liver profile. One of the two liver enzymes measured is serum glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase. This enzyme is commonly known as AST or aspartate aminotransferase. The amount of liver enzyme in the blood is measured by an SGOT test, also known as the AST test.

There are no side effects to this test. Simply, a small amount of blood is drawn. This test combines a complete blood count test and helps diagnose mild to severe liver damage.

The SGOT test price varies from one city to another.

Why is it used?

The doctor may perform an SGOT test to identify if there is liver disease or liver damage. When liver cells are harmed, SGOT gets into the bloodstream, raising blood’s enzyme level.

Several people are known to have illnesses that damage their livers, such as hepatitis C. They must take the test to determine the health of their liver.

SGOT is present in one’s muscles, heart, brain, kidneys, and other body parts, including heart and kidneys. SGOT levels may be higher than usual if these areas are affected. The levels may increase if there is a heart attack or have recently suffered any muscle injury.

What are test preparation methods involved in SGOT?

Simple blood tests are used for the SGOT test. It does not need any special planning. You can still take a few steps to make the process easy.

Do not take over-the-counter (OTC) medicines two days before your test. Remember to let your doctor know if you do take them.

Also, hydrate well the night before your test. It will be easier for your specialist to take your blood if you stay hydrated. Wear something that will make it simple for the technician to take a blood sample from your forearm.

What to consider after the SGOT Test?

Your doctor can recommend new testing if the results of your SGOT test are unclear. The doctor may also ask you to take the following tests:

  • Coagulation panel– This test evaluates the capacity of blood to clot and checks the performance of extra proteins made in the liver.
  • Bilirubin test– Bilirubin is a chemical and by-product of the liver’s regular oxidation of red blood cells. As a result, bile is released by the liver.
  • Glucose test– Unusual low glucose levels are a sign that shows the liver is not working properly.
  • Low platelet count- This can also indicate liver disease.

These blood tests are completed in a full blood panel test (CBP). Your doctor can ask you to do more tests. Tests, such as a liver ultrasound, are conducted to identify the issue with other organs or muscles.

Is SGOT an expensive test?

The SGOT is a simple test. It does not cost a lot of money. The SGOT test price varies from one city to another.
